As Cerner’s new campus takes shape, we’re proud to highlight the many subcontractors that are contributing to the project.
American Fire Sprinkler Corporation is a Kansas City company established nearly half a century ago. The three-generation corporation has been under the same ownership since 1968. Today, the company has grown to become the largest privately owned sprinkler contractor in the area. American Fire is installing the fire suppression system for Phases 1 and 2 of the new campus, including standpipes and fire pumps.
We asked Cliftene Lewis, president and owner of American Fire, to share some thoughts on the company’s involvement with the new campus project.
How did you get involved with the Innovations project?
We had the privilege of working on Cerner’s Continuous Campus. American Fire submitted a bid for this project because we were excited about the possibility of being involved once again in a large project with Cerner and JE Dunn Construction. We knew this project would have a profound impact on the Kansas City area, and we really wanted to be part of it.
What makes this project different from others you have been involved with?
The amount of participation at the city and state levels and the involvement from the community makes this project unique. The numerous benefits this project will bring to the Kansas City area are what makes this project special to us.
What do you think this development means to the Kansas City community?
This Cerner campus will not only provide more job opportunities to the immediate area, but will also draw additional housing and business developments to the surrounding areas. The campus will have a ripple effect of a tremendous benefit to the surrounding communities.
Do you have a personal connection or story of the South Kansas City area?
American Fire held several company holiday parties at the Benjamin Ranch, enjoying hayrides and the holiday atmosphere that Benjamin Ranch was so good at providing to guests. Many of our employees have great memories of shopping trips to Bannister Mall and family gatherings at Benjamin Ranch.
You participated in the topping out ceremony a few months ago; can you share your experience?
I was truly honored and thrilled that American Fire was chosen to be a part of the beam-signing ceremony at Innovations. I believe this project will have such a positive impact on our city in so many ways. Signing the beam and being a part of the team is an experience that I will never forget.
