Health care informatics is rapidly changing the health care industry through actionable data that can be used to create greater efficiency, coordination, safety and improved patient outcomes. But managing large amounts of data depends on technology and individuals who can translate that data.

In this episode of The Cerner Podcast, Dr. Mark Braunstein, professor of the practice in Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing, discusses the future of health care informatics. Dr. Braunstein teaches health informatics both on campus and via his two massive open online courses. He is also involved in a number of efforts and research projects involving Georgia Tech and health industry collaborators.

In this episode, Dr. Braunstein answers these five questions:

  • Your class and open online course has become very successful and well attended. What inspired you to teach SMART on FHIR in the classroom?
  • How many SMART on FHIR apps have your students created since you started teaching this class? What are some of the more interesting apps?
  • How do you think an open standard like FHIR is facilitating the education of the next generation of informaticists?
  • What are the challenges do you and your students face?
  • How do you inspire students to enter the health IT industry and have you seen any major trends over the past few years?
