With the shift from fee-for-service to value-based care moving closer to reality in 2017, the new year promises to be one of the most important on record for provider organizations preparing for reimbursement changes and looking for ways to better leverage their IT solutions to improve clinical and financial outcomes.

Added and enhanced Cerner revenue cycle management solution functionality is designed to help our clients efficiently capture the dollars they’re entitled to during this period of significant and complex transition.

These core advancements can be segmented into three categories: advanced associate expertise, improved delivery infrastructure and code improvements.

Advanced Associate Expertise 

Developed and implemented in 2016, the Cerner Revenue Cycle Certification Program (CRCP) is a new education and training program aimed at advancing revenue cycle knowledge and Cerner solution expertise that empowers our associates to lead more successful projects in today’s dynamic and ever-changing health care environment. This curriculum provides participants with a deeper level of understanding of the entire revenue cycle and how it influences the financial outcomes of an organization. The program offers hands-on experience and training across all Cerner revenue cycle solutions (versus a single solution approach), teaches design and build standards and shares best practices for a successful Clinically Driven Revenue CycleTM system.

Associates graduate from the program by conducting day-in-the-life revenue cycle demonstrations and successfully passing dozens of exams, including the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) program. So far, hundreds of new and experienced Cerner associates have successfully completed the program. And, based on that success, we plan to extend program enrollment to our clients to help supplement their education and training processes in 2017.

Improved Delivery Infrastructure 

To support newer associates and further strengthen and monitor Cerner’s delivery infrastructure of our revenue cycle solutions, we’ve also created a new advisory consultant role. This role serves as a coach to our growing revenue cycle associate population. Each advisory consultant is hand selected by Cerner’s senior executive team, has an average of 10 years of revenue cycle experience and has consistently led successful revenue cycle projects at Cerner. 

These tenured advisory consultants are Cerner revenue cycle solution experts, responsible for four key deliverables in support of our clients during solution implementation: 

  • Support and monitor the delivery project
  • Advise project leads in preparing for current and future state reviews with the client
  • Oversee delivery events on-site, and
  • Help navigate and mitigate project escalations  

Code Improvements

Additionally, we continue to make investments in solution code improvements to address and mitigate technology challenges. With the end goal to improve quality measures and patient outcomes, Cerner’s revenue cycle solution development team has spent the past year diligently standardizing solutions, enhancing code and validating workflows with client testing partners. 

All Cerner Patient Accounting clients will have an opportunity to take these code improvements as a part of their upgrade to Cerner Millennium® in 2017. This code release is scheduled to be available in time to meet Meaningful Use Stage 3 quality measures, including interoperability, information access and patient-centered care.

It’s through our focused attention on these core areas that we’ve made considerable strides forward toward validating solution enhancements with our client testing partners. 

In terms of results, we’re encouraged with the feedback we’ve received from clients that reflects wide-ranging optimism for reaching their organizational targets. We know that further solidifying our delivery infrastructure and providing effective change management tools and strategies will help shorten the time to value realization.

Moving forward, Cerner will continue to harden and advance our core revenue cycle solutions. Most importantly, we’ll hold close to our client-centric approach, which drives a culture of innovation to improve the delivery of health care.
